Meknès

Meknes — The Understated Imperial City

Meknes is one of Morocco’s four imperial cities, built up by Sultan Moulay Ismail in the late 17th century into a capital of grand gates, vast granaries, and miles of defensive walls — on a scale, locals say, meant to rival Versailles. Less visited than Fes or Marrakech, its medina and monuments feel remarkably uncrowded, and it sits minutes from Volubilis, Morocco’s best-preserved Roman ruins.
