Marchica Lagoon
The Marchica lagoon (also called Sebkha Bou Areg) is one of the largest coastal lagoons in the Mediterranean basin — a 115 sq km body of shallow, brackish water separated from the open sea by a narrow sandbar. Recognized as a Ramsar wetland of international importance, it draws migratory flamingos and other waterbirds year-round, while local fishermen still work its calm waters much as they have for generations. Viewpoints on the hills above Nador give sweeping views across the full lagoon to the Mediterranean beyond.
