Bargaining is expected in every medina souk, from Marrakech's spice stalls to Fes's leather shops. The unspoken rule: start at roughly 40-50% of the vendor's first price and meet somewhere in the middle, staying friendly and unhurried the whole time — haggling is a social ritual here, not a fight.
Where you should not haggle: supermarkets, pharmacies, official taxi meters, train and bus tickets, and restaurants with printed menus — prices there are fixed. Government-run cooperative shops (often selling argan oil or carpets with a certification stamp) also tend to have fixed, fair prices.
A good habit: decide your maximum price before you start talking, and be genuinely willing to walk away — it's often the walk-away that gets you the real final offer.
