In the narrow lanes of Marrakech's or Fes's old medina, it's common for someone to offer to "show you the way" or walk you to a specific shop. It's rarely actually free — an expected tip, or a commission from a shop they steer you into, is the real business model.
A firm, polite "la, shukran" (no, thank you) and continuing to walk usually ends it quickly. If you do want a guide, book one through your riad or an official tourism office — official guides carry a badge and are worth it for the history and access they provide, especially in Fes el-Bali, one of the most complex medinas in the world.
Getting lost in the medina isn't actually dangerous — it's part of the experience — but knowing this distinction saves both money and hassle.
